Five-star rating: Newton Village's Health Care Center named 'best nursing home'

Newton Daily News - 11/29/2018

Nov. 29--When seeking out a nursing home's services, Sarah Coy and Angela Adam said the first thing people want to know before making their final decision is who exactly is taking care of their loved one. They want to know if the staff tending to their family member is the best they can ask for and can provide quality aid.

The assistant director of nursing and executive director at Newton Village insisted not only can the facility achieve those expectations, but it now has the awards and recognition to prove it.

On Nov. 6, Newton Village'sHealth Care Center announced it was named "Best Nursing Home" by the U.S. News and World Report. Upon further research, the North Fifth Avenue West facility is the only nursing home in Newton to have received that certification.

On top of the recent honor it earned from the American media company, the care community received a five-star rating by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, earned a Customer Experience Award from Pinnacle Quality Insight and made the National Nursing Home Quality Care Collaborative honor roll.

Adam credited her staff for the accolades the 24-bed health care center has earned thus far.

"Our team members are extraordinary," Adam told the Newton Daily News Tuesday. "We knew they were good, but now we have the awards to prove it. We're super proud."

Nurse staffing is only one of the many details incorporated into U.S. News and World Report's final evaluation. According to a Newton Village press release, the media entity assigns each eligible care center a rating from high performing to poor based on data from the federal Nursing Home Compare program.

Health inspection results, quality measures and star ratings, among other data points, help U.S. News and World Report decide upon its final verdict.

Care communities like Newton Village, which offers assisted living and independent living options for its residents, are also assessed "based on the appropriateness of therapy minutes provided" and the consistency of nurse staffing.

Although the health care center -- the recipient of the nursing home awards -- is only four years old, Newton Village has been serving the community for about 15 years. Coy said the honors Newton Village has earned represents its work and dedication to helping those in the community.

"It's just a really nice reflection of what we do here and how we serve," Coy said. "We can talk about quality measures and we can talk about rules and regulations and policies and procedures, but at the end of the day it's how we serve the people. The best indicator of quality is how we serve every day."
