Post-Bulletin - 11/23/2019

Nov. 22--The third annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities will be from noon to 6 p.m.Dec. 2 at Rochester Civic Theatre.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Daniel Grossman, a Mayo Clinic emergency physician who suffered a spinal cord injury while riding his bike and spent more than four months in various healthcare settings in recovery. Dr. Grossman's talk is set for 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. The Rochester event is inspired by the UN Enable Day celebration that is held around the world.

The day will feature a human library, a film festival and a diverse ability lab. Designed for maximum flexibility, people can come at any time from noon to 6 p.m.

Books will come to life in the living library, where visitors will be able to talk and ask questions of the people depicted in books dealing with disability and diverse perspectives. In the diverse ability lab, experience what it is like to play basketball in a wheelchair or use an adaptive bicycle.

All of it is designed to create "awareness of different abilities and what it's like to live in that person's chair," said Dawn Kirchner, Mayo Clinic's diversity recruitment specialist.

Short films and artwork will be on display throughout the event.

The human library, film festival and diverse ability experience will run from noon to 3 p.m.; the keynote speaker will start at 3 p.m.; art and ability recognition and hors d'oeuvres will be from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and celebration of talent and dessert will go from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
