Nursing home union members authorize CT strike in any impasse

Hour - 11/27/2019

Nov. 26--A union representing Cassena Care workers in Norwalk, Stamford and New Britain set a strike deadline for the second week of December, if the nursing home operator does not respond to complaints about its labor practices.

Members of SEIU District 1199 authorized the union to call a strike to commence Dec. 10, with the union stating the New York-based company has denied pay as established under contracts as well as contributions for health insurance and pensions among other issues. SEIU represents about 240 workers at the three Connecticut facilities that care for some 330 residents.

"We are here today to make sure that Cassena Care complies with our bargaining agreement and to hold them accountable for breaching the law," said Rob Baril, president of SEIU District 1199, as quoted from a Monday press conference in Norwalk. "Caregivers deserve to have dignity in the workplace. These bosses have demonstrated that they are not up to that task."
