Higher Dose of Vitamin D Improves Cognition

Pinecrest Tribune - 8/10/2017

Low levels of vitamin D3 have been associated with dementia and cognitive decline. It was hypothesized that high dose vitamin D3 supplementation would result in enhanced cognitive functioning. A randomized study of healthy adults from northern British Columbia, Canada with low baseline levels of vitamin D3 were randomized to receive High Dose (4000 IU per day) or Low Dose (400IU per day) vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) for 18weeks. The research showed that nonverbal (visual) memory, which is associated with executive functioning processes, seems to benefit from higher doses of vitamin D supplementation, particularly among those who are insufficient (<75nmol/L) at baseline, while verbal memory and other cognitive domains do not.
