BRIEF: State announces phone number for Irma food aid for seniors and disabled

South Florida Sun Sentinel - 11/28/2017

Nov. 28--Phone interviews for seniors and people with disabilities seeking Hurricane Irma emergency food assistance will be conducted Saturday and Sunday, DCF said.

To be eligible, applicants must have already registered online to qualify. The registration deadline was Nov. 9.

The federal government granted the state's request to allow people with disabilities and those older than 60 to skip a required face-to-face interview and complete their application on the phone, according to the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Phone interviews will be conducted between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 855-278-7136.

People with last names beginning with A-L should call on Saturday. And people with last names beginning with M-Z should call on Sunday.

Benefit cards will be mailed to those who qualify.

The Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program serves people who suffered storm losses but don't normally receive food stamps.

The program produced huge crowds and long waits last month at South Florida relief sites where face-to-face interviews were conducted.

The program served more than 1 million families and distributed nearly $900 million in benefits, according to DCF.
