Visit a nursing home in the new year

Herald News - 1/3/2018

We all make New Year's resolutions, especially to lose weight, and then we break them a few weeks later.

If you are retired and have a car, go and visit residents at a nursing home. There are people there whose families never visit because they live across the country. Some residents have no one to visit them.

I was in rehab this past year, and they were so wonderful to me while I was excercising so I could get stronger to go back to my apartment.

During my free time, I would visit residents in the nursing home. They were so lonely when no visitors came to see them. I remember one man I would visit who served in the Navy for years. He had no children and his wife had passed away. He had pictures of the ships he served on and citations from the Navy. I thanked him for his service and asked him questions about his life. He was very lonely and I hoped I helped him a little.

I try to go at least once a month and they are so happy to see me. I even had to learn Portuguese because they never learned English.

There are so many things you can do in your spare time after you retire. You can work in a soup kitchen and bring a hot meal to the homeless. Thank God there are shelters to keep people warm during this awful cold spell.

So please go visit the nursing homes, the residents will be so grateful.
