Why is the city of Woonsocket denying my request for a handicapped parking spot?

The Valley Breeze - 6/21/2018

I have been embattled with city officials since sending a request to establish a handicapped parking spot in front of my residence.

I am handicapped and utilize a mobile scooter to get around. Added to this is bi-lateral osteoarthritis in both knees, and other health issues.

This request was immediately denied by the Traffic Department with several excuses, nothing in writing with an official signature though. Not happy with the excuses, I addressed this issue further up the ladder and have been stalled with excuses, and nothing from anyone being official citing any laws, or city ordnances that state otherwise.

The most recent excuse for the denial came from the city solicitor himself, claiming my street is not wide enough to support a parking space! I don’t understand how that would affect the parking that is already here on the right side of the street and the “no parking” on the left side.

I cannot believe I am fighting with city officials to obtain a parking spot for a handicapped person. I believe the city is violating the Americans with Disabilities Act regarding the right for accessibility.

I will be addressing this matter again before the City Council on July 9. Anyone that wants to support me, please be at this meeting and help me out.
