Singer/songwriter, disability advocate to perform in Falls on Monday

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal - 9/23/2018

Sept. 23--Singer/songwriter and disability advocate Gaelynn Lea will be performing at 6 p.m. on Monday on Old Falls St., outside of the Conference and Event Center. The event is being hosted by Empower.

Lea is a singer, songwriter and classically-trained violinist. In 2016, she was selected as the winner of National Public Radio Music's prestigious Tiny Desk contest, a competition that that draws submissions of original music from over 6,000 musicians across the country. That national recognition expanded her music reach significantly, and she has been touring with her husband, Paul, ever since, playing such venues as the Kennedy Center. Lea also has recorded three albums, including her most recent album "Learning How To Stay," which features background vocals from The Decemberists.

After the show, Lea will be available to answer questions about her music and about disability rights. She has a congenital disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or Brittle Bones Disease. She uses her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change.

In the event of inclement weather, the concert will move inside the Conference and Event Center. Matt's Music Vocal Performance Team from North Tonawanda will be the performance opening act. This program is funded by the New York State Council on the Arts and administered by Arts Services Initiative of Western New York.
