    A program administered by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs that provides low cost group life insurance for service members on active duty, ready reservists, members of the National Guard, members of the Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Public Health Service, cadets and midshipmen of the four service academies, and members of the Reserve Officer Training Corps. Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) coverage is available in $50,000 increments up to the maximum of $400,000. Service members with SGLI coverage have two options available to them upon release from service. They can convert their full-time SGLI coverage to term insurance under the Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI) program or convert to a permanent plan of insurance with one of the participating commercial insurance companies. SGLI is a group life insurance policy purchased by VA from a commercial life insurance company.

Special employment transition assistance includes certification of job skills and experience; information about applying active duty job skills and experience to private sector employment; information about geographic areas of relocation including the labor market and cost of living; identification and location of employment and training opportunities; instruction in resume preparation, job analysis and interview techniques; and information about loans and grants to facilitate acquisition of employment. Also included are programs that help National Guard and Reserve personnel who have been activated for deployment resolve issues pertaining to duty requirements and employment benefits.

    Programs that utilize guided expressive or recreational activities, dietary management, hypnosis or other specialized interventions as auxiliary forms of treatment to improve the adjustment of individuals who have mental, emotional or social problems; and to facilitate other forms of therapy. Supportive therapies may be used for diagnostic purposes and are, on occasion, utilized as primary treatment modalities.

    A disorder affecting individuals who have experienced a psychologically traumatizing event which is characterized by reexperiencing the event through recurrent and intrusive recollections or dreams of the event, or the sudden feeling that the event was recurring; numbing of responsiveness or reduced involvement with the external world beginning sometime after the trauma; and/or one or a combination of other symptoms including hyperalertness or exaggerated startle response, sleep disturbance, guilt about surviving if others have not, memory or concentration impairment, avoidance of memories that recall the trauma and intensification of symptoms when exposed to events that symbolize or resemble the trauma.

    Programs that provide extended shelter and supportive services for homeless individuals and/or families with the goal of helping them live independently and transition into permanent housing. Some programs require that the individual/family be transitioning from a short-term emergency shelter. The length of stay varies considerably by program. It is generally longer than two weeks but typically 60 days or more and, in many cases, up to two years or more. The supportive services may be provided directly by the organization managing the housing or may be coordinated by them and provided by other public or private agencies. Transitional housing/shelter is generally provided in apartment style facilities with a higher degree of privacy than short-term homeless shelters; may be provided at no cost to the resident; and may be configured for specialized groups within the homeless population such as people with substance abuse problems, homeless mentally ill, homeless domestic violence victims, veterans or homeless people with AIDS/HIV. Included are post-domestic violence shelter housing programs that make affordable rental housing (or other accommodations) available to women, generally those who are coming directly out of a domestic violence shelter or other crisis shelter, often in apartment complexes owned by the shelter.

    A program administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs that provides a special monthly allowance that is paid in addition to the regular veteran compensation/pension payment for wartime veterans, surviving spouses and parents of wartime veterans who have large, unreimbursed medical expenses. Claimants must show that they require the "aid and attendance" of another person in order to perform at least two activities of daily living (e.g., grooming, transferring, eating, bathing, dressing or toileting); that they are blind or nearly blind; or that they are a patient in a nursing facility. The A&A Pension can be used for any type of chronic care provider including paid in-home caregivers, adult day care, adult residential care homes, assisted living facilities or skilled nursing facilities. The individual must meet financial eligibility criteria, and a report from an attending physician or other medical evidence validating the need for care is required.

Included are Veteran Services Officers (VSOs) who are trained and accredited by the Veteran's Administration (VA) and can be found in offices specific to each state, the county courthouse, the local VA office and local veteran's rights organizations; as well as legal aid programs that offer more formalized legal assistance.

Veterans who are more seriously disabled may qualify for Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits which are paid in addition to the basic compensation or pension rate. A veteran cannot receive both Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits at the same time.
