Investigation launched into Children's DisABILITY leak

The Brandon Sun - 9/12/2020

The Manitoba Ombudsman has launched an investigation into the leak of the personal information of approximately 9,000 children last month.

On August 28, Children's DisABILITY Services announced it had accidentally sent the information of those children contained in a spreadsheet in an email to 100 unintended recipients.

Information leaked includes the name of children, their gender, address, date of birth, address, nature of their disability and medical or psychological assessment details.

While Manitoba Families proactively reported the leak to the ombudsman's office, an investigation is still being carried out to identify problems and put preventative measures in place to prevent another leak from happening.

In a release sent out Thursday afternoon, Manitoba Families said it welcomes the investigation and will fully cooperate. The department also said that an internal forensic audit of its emails determined that there had been no other breaches of privacy.
