City inspecting sidewalks for 2021 maintenance plan

Post-Bulletin - 9/17/2020

Sep. 17--Inspections for 2021 sidewalk maintenance have started in Northeast Rochester.

The city's 20-year Sidewalk Maintenance Program calls for approximately 5 percent of the city's sidewalks to be inspected annually for defects. These routine inspections are a part of Rochester's Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan, which was adopted in 2013.

The boundaries of the latest inspection area are Viola Road at the north, 11 Avenue Northeast in the west, Canadian Pacific Railroad tracks in the south, and East Circle Drive in the east.

Sidewalk defects are marked with pink paint and property owners will receive a letter notifying them of the necessary repairs. Once notified, property owners will have two months to have defects repaired.

Rochester city code states that each property owner is responsible to keep their sidewalk safe for pedestrians based on standard specifications. Property owners have the option to either hire a contractor to make the repairs or allow the city to contract the repairs.

Sidewalks repaired under the city's contract are expected to be fixed in summer and fall of 2021.
