No injuries at Minerva nursing home fire

Canton Repository - 2/22/2021

MINERVA Some residents of Arbors at Minerva had to be temporarily evacuated Sunday when a fire broke out in the nursing home at 400 Carolyn Court.

There were no injuries. Firefighters from Sandy Creek Joint Fire Department responded at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

"The staff of the nursing home evacuated ... two wings," Chief Aaron Stoller said. "Once the smoke was ventilated, all the residents were allowed back in their rooms except for the fire (site) room. It happened in one of the resident's rooms, in the individual's bathroom. The resident was in their room in bed."

As of Monday, Stoller did not know what ignited the fire. The State Fire Marshal is assisting with the investigation.

The total damage is estimated at $10,000.

Much of the blaze was under control when firefighters arrived. That is because of a fire-suppression system and an extinguisher that the staff used, according to Stoller.

"We did some overall checking for extension into the attic or adjacent spaces," Stoller said.
