Cumberland County votes to sell Claremont nursing home

Patriot-News - 7/28/2021

CARLISLE — Cumberland County is selling its nursing home.

After 10 months of negotiating an agreement and opposition from a citizen’s group that wanted the county to keep the 192-year-old home, Cumberland County commissioners voted 2-1 Wednesday to sell the Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Commissioners said Claremont had been losing money for years, dwindling its reserve funds. The tipping point to sell the home was a projected financial shortfall of more than $2 million for 2021, the cost of which would have fallen to the county’s taxpayers, commissioners said.

The Citizens Saving Claremont group, however, has been arguing that the county can use a portion of the federal American Rescue Plan funds to make up that shortfall, giving the county time to stabilize the nursing home’s finances and operations and keep it in county hands.

The purchase price is $22.3 million.
