Nursing home workers to rally at state capitol

The Citizens' Voice - 5/25/2022

May 25—Nursing home workers from Northeast Pennsylvania will join hundreds of caregivers throughout the state to rally at the state capitol in Harrisburg on Wednesday.

They plan to urge legislators to pass nursing home reform and to allocate "sustainable, accountable" funding in the state budget, SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania announced.

SEIU said in a release that the pandemic as well as "irresponsible" nursing home ownership and decades of "regulatory neglect" have left the nursing home system in a catastrophic crisis.

Caregivers plan to sing, chant, speak out and march through Harrisburg while demanding safe staffing ratios for certified nursing assistants and licensed practical nurses, full funding of $300 million in permanent, recurring investment into care as well as "real accountability" for tax dollars. SEIU officials said 70 cents of every dollar that nursing homes should be spent on care for residents.

In addition, nursing home workers will plant hundreds of yard signs in Harrisburg.
