News Tribune - 9/19/2022

Sep. 19—For the first time in two years, Pierce County's free annual Alzheimer's Conference will be held in person.

The 2022 conference theme is "Busting the Myths and Misinformation of Dementia." Doors open at 8 a.m., and the conference will run through 1 p.m.Oct. 1 at Rainier View Christian Church, 12305 Spanaway Loop Road S., Tacoma.

Featured speakers will be Laura Wayman, author of "A Loving Approach to Dementia Care" and past conference attendee, and John Finke, associate professor of science at the University of Washington Tacoma.

According to the program, Wayman, known as the "Dementia Whisperer," will offer insights "for promoting changes in memory care, as she continues her mission of raising dementia awareness."

Finke will offer information about medical interventions being explored in Alzheimer's treatment.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, irreversible neurological disorder. It is the most common form of dementia diagnosed and among the leading causes of death in Washington state.

Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists it as the fifth leading cause of death for adults aged 65 and older, and the sixth leading cause of death for all adults.

The disease affects approximately 6 million Americans, and there is no cure.

In a statement promoting the conference, Finke said, "As our population ages, Alzheimer's disease is a rapidly increasing condition and is the primary increasing cause of mortality."

He added, "The goal of my talk is to have an honest discussion on both the medical interventions currently being explored as well as lower tech solutions that may reduce the cost and psychological burden of care for individuals," with the disease.

Alzheimer's is just one of many types of dementia, and the conference applies to all forms. There will be a panel discussion and a chance to meet with providers to learn about local resources.

For caregivers, the conference also provides 1.5 hours Continuing Education credits, which can be requested when registering.

Attendees should register for tickets at piercecountywa.gov/1986/Aging-and-Disability-Resources or call the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 253-798-4600 or 800-562-0332.
